Sony May Bring Back The 13 Columbia 3-D Movies Of The 1950's
Sony hinted (at a corporate presentation held on June Ninth of this year) that Columbia's thirteen 3D titles from the 1950s may be one solution for some of the programming needed for the launch of two new 3D networks -- ESPN 3D and the Discovery-Sony-Imax channels. I'm really excited about this, mainly because home DVD versions shouldn't be too far behind. In case you don't know; Sony re-struck (and in some cases restored) prints of most of the Golden Age Columbia titles for the World 3-D Expo in 2003 at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. These included Miss Sadie Thompson, Stranger Wore a Gun, Man in the Dark, Gun Fury, The Nebraskan, The Mad Magician, Fort Ti, Drums of Tahiti, Jesse James vs. the Daltons, and Spooks! and Pardon My Backfire (Three Stooges shorts). Perhaps Sony will utilize Columbia's early 1980's 3-D efforts as well. These 3-D Expos also presented brand spanking new prints of Taza, Son of Cochise, Those Redheads from Seattle, The Diamond Wizard, Jivaro, Cease Fire, Gorilla at Large, as well as various shorts and cartoons. WB provided a gorgeous newly struck print of Kiss Me Kate and Charge at Feather River for Expo I. For Expo II the only surviving dye-transfer Technicolor print of Kate was shown. The material is out there, now lets just get it properly onto a shiny little disc.
